Big Ups to Junior Pirate rider Austin Hoeft for throwing down a commanding victory at the 2009 Ashland Apring Thaw. Austin won the Cat 2 Junior Men 15-18 by almost 19 seconds. A time that would have put him second in Cat1 Junior and placed him 24th overall out of 176 competitors. |

Steve Peat Wins AGAIN at round 3 in Vallnord, Andora!
Sam Hill crashes after being ahead at the split. TranscendMag says "Sam Hill was up by 1.6 seconds less than 40 seconds into the course when he had a horrendous crash off of the face away drop and ended up 50m away from his landing zone in a snowbank. He walked away unscathed, somehow." Peat shreds like there is no tomorrow barely edging Atherton, stamps his name in the history books, and pulls further ahead in the hunt for the overall. Lots of media out there, check out Littermag.com
1. Peat Steve 2:22.05 2. Gee Atherton 2:22.07 3. Greg Minaar 2:23.46 4. Mick Hannah 2:23.71 5. Justin Leov 2:23.93 6. Nick Beer 2:24.00 READ MORE

Eureka Skate Park Ground Breaking Confirmed...
"Council Decision: On May 5th, 2009, the City Council voted 5-0 to approve construction of the Eureka Skate Park...
The fundraising committee will continue to raise funds to support the park. The park design being built by DANCO is actually smaller than our original design. The fundraising committee hopes to connect a skate plaza to the main park. We’ll also be raising money for finishing touches, like drinking fountains, benches, etc.
The Eureka Skate Park was over 20 years in the making. Thank you, again, to everyone in our community who helped make this happen."

Kings Range Ride: My sincere apologies, sickness and car trouble kept me from making it down this weekend. For those who did get down you're awesome and I owe you all for your Proud Piracy. Sometimes these things just don't work out. But I will live to fight another day. Cheers |

An already brilliant trail recently added to our Nor-Cal collection, now has an even brighter future. "Mountain bikers are buzzing about a $600,000 federal funding appropriation to expand Paradise Royale, a purpose-built mountain bike trail in California's King Range National Conservation Area (NCA)." While we on the north coast are whining about riding in the rain, muck, and mire our two wheeled family in the Mid West are happy to shred a little Pow Pow. Pirate Patriot Jed Olson, leading at left, hooked up coverage of this sick "boardercross" event from back home in Wisconsin. Many big names came out, like Greg Herbold, who he bested in this round. Attended the Cyclo Cross finals last weekend in Doyle Park, Santa Rosa. Run by the primates at RideMonkey this was my first "real" cross race, had a great time, and very impressed with the events organization. Snapped some photos on my new $8 Walgreens film camera, a great deal considering they include free film for life...

Here it is, a wonderfully reptitive album of this February's SoHum Session. It may take a bit to load, so be patient, but the sequences had to be preserved. The day was perfect, great weather, good company, lots of air, and plenty of Photos. |

A good friend and great competitior, JJ Katri, suffered a severe Brachial Plexus Injury on a road training ride on August 31st, 2008. He has since been on the rocky road to recovery. He has documented much of the struggle in a blog which will be of interest to anyone who knows JJ or has experienced serious injury. - "My arm was still pretty much flail and very numb. The one positive was that my hand had always worked. My thumb was numb, but I could use it. So about 3 weeks post accident I ended up having an EMG, which is a nerve conduction test to see what muscles are still firing in my arm. This test showed, in fact, that many muscles were receiving very little, if any, signal..." BLOG HOW TO HELP

I have yet to find a place in which I feel more alive, you could say than on my bike going down a trail on some god forsaken hill that has been built to only be ridden by people who have the same ambitions as the people who build them. This is not in fact a physical place, for there are many trails, but is a place of mind that attracts me and others like me.

Matt Cipes of Chico brought the pain in more ways than one at the Red Tail Hawk DH Pirate Ride in December. Cipes won the race but had to leave on a back board. Here's a little update from the god of thunder... "I just wanted to update you guys on my condition. After a CT scan and several X-rays it was determined that I fractured both my tail bone (ramus) and my pelvic ring, as well as separating the pelvic ring from the tail bone on both the left and right side. Now I have two hollow stainless steel bolt and a plate holding me together. I spent about two months on a wheel chair and a couple weeks on crutches. It was a long journey but I am finally back on the bike and loving every second. Thanks for putting on kick ass races, when I get well enough I'll come back for some more victories and good times!
